Organizations Helping Women in Politics

In politics, women often face more challenges in raising funds, getting elected, and being taken seriously by their male counter parts. In a previous blog post, I mentioned that women only make up around 25% of the U.S. Congress; that statistic is proportional for women across all levels of politics.

According to RepresentWomen.Org,

"Women are 51% of the population in the U.S. but make up only:

  • 27% of Congress at large
  • 24% of the U.S. Senate
  • 27% of the U.S. House of Representatives
  • 0% of presidents of the United States
  • 30% of statewide elected executives of any kind
  • 31% of state legislators
  • 31% of the largest cities' mayors
  • 25% of mayors in cities with populations over 30,000"

With women still having a long way to go to reach equality, there are many organizations out there offering resources and a starting place for women who want to get involved with politics. I think websites like these can be a huge help for all women, but especially for young women entering the political environment.

Emily's List is an organization that helps women who are getting into politics understand the importance of money, especially early money, for campaigns. They aim to help Democratic women run for office at every level of government by recruiting women and building their campaigns.

Ignite is a non-partisan organization that supports high school and college aged girls and women through 'chapters' at their schools. This organization is aimed at supporting political activism and encouraging voting in younger generations. Ignite also offers resources for the parents of these girls and women to guide them in supporting their daughters.

Running Start is also a non-partisan organization that supports high school and college aged girls and women, but they focus on fostering their political interesting and expanding their leadership skills. This organization has a fellowship program that take 14 college aged women to D.C. to give them first-hand experience in the political realm. Running Start also hosts a political summit for girls and women of all ages to learn more about politics and leadership.
