Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez became the youngest woman to serve in the United States Congress at 29 years old. She represented New York's 14th District in the House of Representatives, and is currently serving her second term. AOC is well-known for her activism, both in office and prior to being in office. In her short time as a representative, AOC has accomplished many great things, and I'm sure she will continue to do so in her current term. However, since she is only a few months into her second term, I'd like to discuss her accomplishments during her first two-year term.
- passed legislation to move $5 million to treatment for opioid addiction with funds that were shifted from the DEA budget
- had $10 million put toward clean up of toxic bombardment sites that were causing people to become ill in Vieques, Puerto Rico
- helped repeal the Faircloth Amendment in the House of Representatives, which will allow the U.S. to build more public housing
- passed legislation in the House to ban the funds that were going to allow for transfer of lethal military equipment to Bolivia
- introduced more amendments than 90% of new House lawmakers
- authored and introduced the Green New Deal with Sen. Ed Markey with 115 cosponsors
- introduced the Green New Deal for Housing which would invest $180 billion over 10 years, creating up to 250 thousand new jobs
- authored the Just Society suite of bills (watch video for more information)
- introduced the Loan Shark Prevention Act
- introduced the COVID-19 Funeral Assistance Act
- cosponsored 78 pieces of legislation that passed the House and 14 that were signed into law
